Looks like I either have to get a VESA 2.0 card working (I have two that
might be) or compile my own kernel modeled on yours but with the patch.

Would I have any choice after booting of 80 vs 132 columns?

So there is a choice of using fb like any other X server (which lets you
unload it later) or xfbdev. I am still confused. First to get a patched
kernel working.....

We had one card with two fans on it that took up 3 pci slots and had
special RAM (64MB). This card looks like 8MB RAM.
