I think you would have to put a link to xdm in one of your rc/init files
for it to come up "automatically." Those files you mention look mostly
like config files. I'd doubt you'd need to download any of them: they
sound to me like parts of some other package(s). Xsetup (minus the _0) is
already in BL3 anyway, isn't it? At least on older versions of BL3 it was
the script for allowing you to enter X settings like mouse location and
screen resolution. Anyway, once you get xdm to come up, it just looks in
the home directory of whoever is logging into it for X settings (which
window mgr to use, background, X programs to auto-start etc). If you
already have X working and set up the way you want it, xdm should take you
right to it when you login.

Are you saying xclock (which I suggested earlier) isn't suitable? It
moves (the minute hand, most noticeably) and can have whatever colors you
want (e.g., xclock -bg blue -fg black -hl red). You'll have to assess the
entertainment factor yourself, though. But again, it's manual in the
sense that you need to start/maximize it. Probably a way to make it kick
in automatically owing to some event or time limit, but I have no idea how
to do that.
