An online "for-the-layman" article on the subject is at:

http://www.thewritingcode.com/pages/transcripts/daniels.html

It is important to realize that contrary to what has been said, Egyptian
hieroglyphs were not logographic in the sense "pictures representing
concepts." In fact, the key to decipherment of hieroglyphics came
when linguists realized this is not what was going on.

A more scientific article by the same author is available at:

http://oi.uchicago.edu/research/pubs/catalog/saoc/saoc60.html
(Click the down arrow icon next to the "Terms of Use" to download
the entire book).

It is titled: "Littera ex occidente: Toward a Functional History of Writing."
