Depending on what time of the year it is, wouldn't the nature of  
valleys dictate that opening into had some kind of water source? I  
only say this because last January I went into Sinai to retrace Moses  
footsteps and it soon became clear how he chose his root. All the  
valleys are potential rivers. Just that outside of the rainy season  
that river is not visible. Because it is under ground. And that's why  
the trees grow in these valleys. Because their long roots grown under  
the ground and reach down to the water. And that's how the ancients  
knew where to dig for a well. Because if there were trees growing,  
that was were the water was closest to the surface and in greatest  
quantity.
