Yes, the term ‘Sri Lanka’ has its origin in
Sanskrit and means venerable Lanka. The word Sri
means venerable or respected. The term Lanka is
the name of this Island. It was named Lanka in
Mahabharata and Ramayana. Lanka means land.

So Sri Lanka means "Venerable Land."

Apparently this same word "sri" is the only
pronounceable word starting with "sr" in Webster's
Dictionary (college edition). Very interesting.
Thanks, Joel.

Joel, I see what you're saying. In the
Merriam-Webster's Dictionary I have there are no
words beginning with "sr" except "sri." This word
is of Sanskrit background, literally means
"majesty, holiness," and is used "as a
conventional title of respect when addressing or
speaking of a distinguished Indian.

Maybe this word is related to the name of Sri Lanka.

Yours,
Harold Holmyard
