dear friends on b-hebrew,
i wonder if anyone has worked through Vance's published dissertation, The
Question of Meter in Biblical Hebrew Poetry (2001)? also, has anyone seen
a review in the journals...?
i wonder if anyone spotted the problematic treatment of mowinckel, and
the absence of M's sources: hoelscher, bickell, etc...
question: must lines be isometrical? or following Freedman and others, can
lines be heterometrical while contributing to isometrical stanzas? so, if
pairs of lines are generally 5 units (5 + 5 = 10), say, is it kosher to
have 6 + 4 for a pair? it is not clear to me in Vance's statistical
studies if that is ruled out . . .
i'm pretty sure i can show that lamentations 3 is a regular heptameter
(7 + 7 + 7 = 21 feet per stanza), if you will permit 6+8+7 as an
infrequent variant . . . just a thought.
