One problem with your solution, Harold, and also with George's, is that 
Joshua son of Nun seems to be descended from this Beriah son of Ephraim. 
That rules out these event as taking place after the Conquest, unless 
vv. 21b-24 are taken as an interpolation.

George's suggestion that this might have taken place before the 
Israelites went into Egypt doesn't work, because Ephraim was only a 
young child when this happened.
