Although I've mentioned this point before I thought I'd do it again because I just read it in Fergus Millar's A Greek Roman Empire.
He says, "these records bring us (at least) incomparably closer to the spoken Greek of antiquity than is possible for any other period, and do so on a very extensive scale." (p99)
The ACO being the stenographic records of what was spoken, and documents read at the early church councils.
