Con Campbell has already supplied a helpful response
to these basic questions.

I have found useful a glossary offering definitions
and illustrations of linguistic terms at:
http://www.sil.org/linguistics/GlossaryOfLinguisticTerms/
but I must reiterate my complaint about the Linguists'
"tower of Babel" -- I have found that many of the terms
are just not employed consistently by all their users.
